I’ve always enjoyed being active, and growing up I was always playing outside. Although I played many different sports in school, I hated running. In high school my sister used to make me go running with her to get ready for volleyball season and I hated it! Three miles was the most she could get out of me. In college I started running to stay in shape and one night at a party a bet was made that resulted in me running my first half marathon.
I ran many half marathons in my 20s and when I was 29, I went through a divorce and decided that for my 30th birthday I was going to run the Seattle Marathon. It was cold and miserable, but I did it and then swore I would never run a marathon again. Six months later I ran another one! Somehow, after a couple years of running marathons, I decided to run a 50k and then to run around Mt. St. Helens. At this point in time there was not a lot of information out there about how to get started running trails and ultramarathons, so there was a LOT of trial and error as far as finding trails, navigating trails, what to wear on trails, how to stay safe from bears (roots/rocks/owls/etc...) and most of all what to eat before, during, and after a long trail run. Since that time Instagram has become a treasure trove of advice and anecdotes from lead ultra-runners, legitimate dietitians, and every Tom, Dick, and Harry. When I first started running ultras there was not enough information and now there is so much information it is hard to tell who actually knows what they are talking about.
So, in 2018 I decided to get my master’s degree in Dietetics. I completed my degree, over a thousand internship hours, and became a Registered Dietitian so that I could help everyday athletes cut through the overabundance of information from social media “influencers” and find what works for them to help them achieve their health and performance goals.
